We’re going to kick off a Facebook activism campaign in conjunction with EPIC’s January 6 workshop The Stripping of Freedom: A Careful Scan of TSA Security Procedures. The conference has incredible speakers, and it’s being streamed online so it’s a great chance to get good information out there. So one of the main goals of the activism is to raise awareness.
It’s also a good opportunity for a basis for future campaigns. Eventually, we want to get to the point where we can mobilize quickly to support other kinds of activism — for example, before congressional hearings or votes. So think of this as a dry run :-)
There are three easy ways to participate:
- Share links: to the EPIC event page, to this post, and to other related posts. If there are some friends you know are interested, make sure to tag them so they’re more likely to see it.*
- Change your Facebook status. Here’s what mine says:
It’s time to stand up against the TSA’s degrading patdowns and ineffective scanning. Stop stripping our freedom!
If you prefer something more verbose, here’s what TXagogo from FlyerTalk suggests
“Bad news for those of us who value freedom and privacy: the TSA is now using passive MMW technology to thermally view our bodies. This is being done PRIOR to the checkpoints, in the general areas of the airports open to the public. They are now extending their reach further and looking at our bodies without our consent or even our knowledge.”
Or use whatever language feels right to you. Suggestions? Please leave them in the comments!
- When your friends change their status and share links, make sure to “like” them and add a comment. This will make it more likely that their friends will see it and help spread the word
